As promised, we will keep you informed of our activites on a regular basis. The former Wednesday Weekly will adapt to our new colloquium rhythm and will now appear as Multiple Secularities Monthly.

Colloquium 19 June 2024 with Furkan Dilben

Our Guest Researcher Furkan Dilben will give a presentation titled

From Tawafuq to Coincidence, Renunciation of Five Daily Prayers: Experiences of Abandoning Religion and Secularization Processes of Religious Men

Furkan Dilben’s dissertation focuses on the everyday life routines and secularization processes of males who were raised in Muslim families and communities, engaged in religious activities for over the years, but later gave up their religious way of life. The project, which includes in-depth interviews with 25 ex-Muslim male participants, intends to shed light on the rhythms and rituals of religious habitus by considering both Henri Lefebvre's rhythmanalysis approach and Pierre Bourdieu's habitus notion. The study aims to contribute to discussing on secularization in Turkey's 2000s, emphasizing the ordinary aspects of daily life and focusing on the transformative practices resulting from routine encounters.

Workshop: 'Traditionism’ and Multifaceted Responses to Secularization amongst Mizrahim in Israel

Yemima Hadad, Junior Professor for Jewish Studies at Leipzig University, will host a workshop on 'Traditionism’ and Multifaceted Responses to Secularization amongst Mizrahim in Israel on 20 June 2024.

The Sephardi encounter with modernity shows a counterexample to the Ashkenazi and European experience of secularization. The Mizrahi encounter with modernity offers a case study for thinking of secularization in Israel and beyond. This workshop explores the religious and secular aspects of what we view as Mizrahi renaissance in the context of intra-Jewish power struggles and political debates in Israel.

Workshop: Crisis and Secularity

The DGS section Sociology of Religion and the Working Group Secular Worldviews will host their annual workshop in Leipzig on 28 and 29 November 2024. The organisers call for abstracts, particularly on 4 aspects of Crisis and Secularity: 1) Secular Interpretations of Crisis, 2) The Secular in Crisis, 3) Social Crises on the Edge of the Secular, 4) Power Relations. The deadline for abstracts is 31 August 2024.
