Jakob ist auf der intensiven Suche nach Sinn im Leben und spirituellem Halt. Sein Bruder Elí, der Regisseur dieses Films, begleitet ihn dabei. Nach einem Gotteserlebnis in den marokkanischen Bergen konvertiert Jakob mit 23 Jahren zum Islam. Kurz darauf wendet er sich dem Salafismus zu, einer radikalen konservativen Strömung des Islams.
Der mehrfach preisgekrönte Dokumentarfilm dokumentiert Beobachtungen, Gespräche, Missionierungsversuche – und damit auch Irritationen, Konflikte und Jakobs Entfremdung von Freunden und Familie. Das Ergebnis ist ein sehr persönlicher Filmdialog und zugleich eine differenzierte Reflexion gesellschaftlicher Debatten um Religions- und Meinungsfreiheit, um Fremdes und Vertrautes, um den schmalen Grat zwischen ersehntem spirituellen Halt und gefährlicher ideologischer Vereinnahmung.

“I have lost my brother to a God who is a stranger to me. Jakob seeks the truth and I seek Jakob. Will we meet again?” Jakob is intensively looking for meaning in life and spiritual guidance. His brother Elí, the director of this film, accompanies him in this search. Having had a deep religious experience in the Moroccan mountains, Jakob converts to Islam at the age of 23. Shortly afterwards he turns to Salafism, a radical conservative movement of Islam.
The award-winning documentary film documents observations, conversations, attempts at missionary work – and thus also irritations, conflicts and Jakob’s alienation from friends and family. The result is a very personal film dialogue and at the same time a nuanced reflection of social debates about freedom of religion and freedom of opinion, about the foreign and the familiar, about the thin line between longed-for spiritual stability and dangerous ideological usurpation.
