Wednesday Weekly 26 July 2023

Dear friends and colleagues,

This week we would like to remind you that we will show the movie “König hört auf” in our Screening Religion series tonight. We would also like to draw your attention to a call for applications for a lecturer teaching position at the University of Zurich as well as to a workshop on “Saints and Sacred Places in Peninsular Medieval India”. Lastly, we would also like to remind you that things will be a little quieter in the coming weeks as the KFG enters its quiet August. We will continue to keep you updated on a weekly basis, but there will be no official events and thus no colloquia during that time.

Enjoy and have a good week!

Quiet August in the KFG

Many of us will be on holiday in August. Therefore we will have a short summer break with our official events this month and have a quiet August. So there will be no colloquia for the next five weeks. But also all those who will stay in Leipzig can quickly get into the holiday feeling in the evenings and weekends: Around Leipzig there are a lot of beautiful lakes, for example the Cospuden Lake – or as the locals call it: Cossi – or the Kulkwitzer Lake – also known as Kulki. Both are easily and comfortably accessible by bike. And if you feel like another bike tour and fresh snacks, you can check out the Mundraub website and plan a tour to freely accessible fruit trees and fruit bushes.

Reminder: Screening Religion „König hört auf“ tonight

The long-time youth pastor Lothar König from Jena does not fit into any system. In the GDR he was shadowed by the Stasi, after reunification he was tirelessly active in the fight against right-wing radicalism, often in the front row. He was personally attacked and eventually put on trial. The cinematic portrait shot by his son, the Leipzig filmmaker Tilman König, is nevertheless not a glorifying homage, but a critical tribute to a feisty character who has to reinvent himself with retirement. A documentary about the question of what it means to act and live politically across generations.

The film will be followed by a discussion with the director Tilman König.

International Workshop on “Saints and Sacred Places in Peninsular Medieval India” | 31 July – 1 August, Vienna and online

Hagiographies gain increasing importance in the religious traditions of peninsular India beginning with the medieval period, and this is a universal trend that cuts across all sectarian communities and contributes to formulating sectarian identities. The workshop, which is organised by the Institute for the Cultural and Intellectual History of Asia of the Austrian Academy of Scienes, aims to combine the efforts of experts in Śaiva, Vaiṣṇava, and Jaina traditions to understand the socio-historical processes underlying this development.

31 July – 1 August 2023

Registration for on-site participation is already over, but you can register here to join the workshop online via zoom.
