Mascha Schulz on Secularism in Bangladesh

We are happy to announce Mascha Schulz' recent article ‘That was a good move’—Some remarks on the (ir)relevance of ‘narratives of secularism’ in everyday politics in Bangladesh.

Drawing on ethnographic research she discusses the perception of the Lady Justice controversy in 2017 Bangladesh, bringing into question the seemingly self-evident relevance of the dichotomy between “Secularism” and “Islam” for the matter.

CfP: Workshop and Special Issue on Religion’s Other

Furthermore, Mascha will co-organise a workshop on Committed to Religion's Other: The Anthropology of Secularism, Atheism and Non-Religion in December. Based on an ethnographic approach that includes non-Eurocentric perspectives and categories, the workshop aims to contribute aspects to debates on secularism, secularity, and non-religiosity that have been neglected so far. It is planned to publish a special issue on the topic afterwards.

14-16 December, University of Zurich, Department of Social Anthropology and Cultural Studies
Deadline: 1 July

New Reading Group

Florian Zemmin has kindly taken the initiative to launch a new Reading Group within the KFG.

People sharing an interest in a certain book or also an article are meeting there to discuss it (not necessarily the whole book, but one or two chapters at a time), also occasional participation is possible.

All members of the KFG are welcome to suggest works to read and discuss. The person suggesting a work will provide a digital copy to the others. We’ll be reading that work which most people expressed interest in.

The group will start with the discussion of Casanova, José. Global Religious and Secular Dynamics: The Modern System of Classification. Leiden: Brill, 2019 in July.

For more information on the format please get in touch with Florian.

CfP: Special Issues on Religion and Pandemic

The journal religions as well as the journal Entangled Religions seek for contributions for special issues on religion and pandemic. Whilst Entangled Religions is setting a focus on shifts in interpretations, populare lore, and practices, the publication from religions specifically sheds a light on spheres of religion and non-religion during the pandemic.
