CfP: Religion and the Production of Difference

The Dutch Association for the Study of Religion will host its annual conference in Groningen this year from 30 October to 1 November 2019 focusing on Religion and the Production of Difference. In highlighting the role of religion in the production of difference at various levels of society (e.g. religious-non-religious, but also in relation to ethnicity and gender, national identity etc.), the conference aims to draw attention to the ways that religious practices, identifications, and alliances establish 'same-ness' through the fixing of meaning (e.g. “normative” practices or textual interpretations) and the delineation and legitimation of authority. Deadline for panel suggestions is 1 April, Deadline for papers is 1 June. Please send your proposals to ngg2019@rug.nl.

Paper on Sacralizing Nation and State and ‘Stopping Islamicization’

Konrad Pedziwiatr recently published an article on Sacralizing Nation and State and ‘Stopping Islamicization’ in the Leipzig based online journal Connections. The article discusses the role of the church in Poland in the context of re-Christianization and the prevention of a perceived process of Islamicization. The author argues that the alliance between church and state in Poland continues to sacralize nation and state, and portrays migrants from Islamic countries as a key threat.
