KFG: Public Lecture and Discussion with Donovan Schaefer and Monique Scheer

We are happy to announce a public lecture that will be presented by our Senior Researcher Yasemin Ural. Together with Freie Universität Berlin and its CRC "Affective Societies", Yasemin has organized this public talk that will also include a discussion. Donovan Schaefer, Assistant Professor at the Department of Religious Studies at the University of Pennsylvania will present his ideas on "Feeling Faithless: Making the Affective Turn in Secularism Studies". Monique Scheer, Professor of Historical and Cultural Anthropology at University Tübingen, will comment on his presentation.

Recording of Online Lecture by Florian Zemmin on "The Secular in Middle East and Islamicate History"

On 26 November 2020, our Senior Researcher Florian Zemmin gave an online talk on "The Secular in Middle East and Islamicate History". His lecture was part of the online lecture series "ReOrienting the Global Study of Religion" which is organized by Armando Salvatore, Senior Research Fellow at KFG and now Professor of Global Religious Studies at the School of Religious Studies at the McGill University in Montréal/Canada and his university colleague from the Institute of Islamic Studies Robert Wisnovsky.
 
The recording of Florian’s lecture, which in addition includes a comment by Sari Hanafi from the American University of Beirut and a discussion, is now available on McGill University’s Youtube Channel.

Call for Papers: International Society for the Sociology of Religion 36th (digital) Conference

Globalization brings about the encounter and transfiguration of worldviews and ways of life and yet religion, like much else, is a global phenomenon, as the local context is still determinative. Migration, labor mobility and travel lead to the diffusion of religion, but also to the questioning of religious boundaries and their potential transformation. The difference between religion, spirituality, culture, and non-religion becomes itself diffuse and even blurred. This conference entitled "Religion in Global/Local Perspective: Diffusion, Migration, Transformation" highlights the transnational, global and local character of these issues.

You are welcome to submit a paper proposal to one of the nearly 60 different sessions.

Finding: Documentary "Weit. Die Geschichte von einem Weg um die Welt" ("Far: The Story of a Journey around the World")

Our Project Assistant Anja Müller warmly recommends to you an engaging and moving documentary: In spring 2013, Gwendolin Weisser and Patrick Allgaier set off on a journey around the world, with the intent not to use air travel. Full of experiences, they return in summer 2016 after 100,000 kilometres. In their encouraging and hopeful film, you are following the travellers from country to country on their fascinating encounters and adventures, which they documented with their mobile phone cameras. As viewer you are drawn into a different sense of time and the special attention to details in nature and everyday life. The filmmakers succeed in overcoming cultural boundaries and very practical obstacles by trusting the people they meet. The film will be shown in German and original languages with German subtitles.
