CfA: Assistant Professor for Secularism in Islamic Modernity (Tenure Track)

The Faculty of Humanities at Göttingen University invites applications for the position of an Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) (W1 t.t. W2) for Secularism in Islamic Modernity. The successful candidate will have a strong capability to cover Secularism, secular processes and dynamics as well as non-religious concepts and traditions in the modern Arabic and Islamic World in research as well as teaching. With regard to research, special emphasis is given to the study of secularism in the modern period, while profound knowledge of its historical tradition is expected as well. Interested candidates should send their application no later than 11 April 2018.

Reminder: Public Keynote

On 14 March, 6 p.m., Jens Schlieter will open our workshop on Religion and medicine in pre-modern Asian and Islamicate cultures. Distinctions and differentiations in emic discourse and practices from 600 BC to 1600 AD with a public keynote on The Relationship of Religion and Medicine: Reading the “four-root Tantra” (rGyud bzhi) with Niklas Luhmann’s Sociological “Systems Theory”.

Reading is Believing? Sacred Texts in a Scientific Age

How have the scriptural traditions of Islam and Christianity been interpreted in the modern age? In particular, what challenges have been posed to the Bible and Qur'an by developments in science and technology? These are the core questions of this multi-disciplinary academic colloquium, which will be held at Clare College, Cambridge on 26-28 March 2018. Deadline for registration is 14 March 2018.

Lecture on (Religious) Tolerance online

Rainer Forst's public lecture on Tolerance - On the Anatomy of a Contested Concept (Toleranz - Zur Anatomie eines umstrittenen Begriffs), held at the Paulinum of Leipzig University on 24 January 2017 is now online. The lecture was held in German and was part of the "exkurs-lectures" series of the DFG.
